Be Prepared: A Simple Potty Pouch for Travel

Don’t Travel Without a Potty Plan

Bathrooms while traveling are unpredictable. Sometimes they are spotless and easy to find. Other times, not so much. One thing that becomes clear when traveling internationally is that not all restrooms are created equal. That is why I always travel with a small “potty pouch.”

When traveling internationally, it helps to be prepared. Bathroom access, setup, and supplies can vary widely from place to place, and it is not unusual to encounter restrooms that work a little differently than what you are used to at home.

In many parts of Europe, for example, public restrooms require cash payment. Having a few Euro coins or small bills on hand can make the difference between calmly continuing your day and scrambling for change. In cafés and pubs, using the restroom often means buying a drink, which can easily lead to another stop… and another.

There are also a few common surprises travelers encounter. Some restrooms do not have toilet seat covers, if they have a seat at all. Many do not have tissue. Sinks may or may not be conveniently stocked. None of this is unusual. It is simply part of traveling. The key is knowing ahead of time and packing accordingly.

That is where a potty pouch comes in. Mine is a small zip pouch that lives in my day bag, and it contains just a few essentials:

  • Travel-size hand wipes

  • A small pack of tissues

  • Individually wrapped disinfecting or hand wipes

  • Seat covers

  • A few Euro coins or small bills (buy something small and keep your coins)

Travel is more enjoyable when you are comfortable. A little preparation goes a long way.

The items linked below are some of the essentials I travel with.
